moving!

looks like i will be without a computer for several days - maybe even a week or more

you see - i own the money pit. everything that could possibly go wrong with a house has gone wrong with this one. in the 2 years that we have owned this piece of American Dream, we have replaced the hotwater heater upstairs. which, of course, leaked through the floor and down into a wall on the main floor hallway. The heater went out. Which, as luck would have it, was not merely just a heater, but a heat pump. So, ya know, much more expensive than any regular 'ol heater. Several times every summer the air-conditioner freezes up because it is much too small for a house this size. and then, add a second floor - well, major problems.
We, through a oh-so-joyous experience (i'll spare you), discovered the electrical wiring is 'jerry-rigged' to the point of... well, it's just comical.
oh, how i could go on and on... but i'll stop with our most recent disaster.
at 6:45 this morning, i opened the back door for my puppies to go potty and discovered a lake of disturbing size in my back yard. i walked around to the alley and saw water flowing - not leaking - from the little man-hole cover thingy above my water spicket thingy (hey, i'm no plumber). i phoned the emergency water repair people who came out, shut the water off and gave me the wonderful news that it is on "our side" of the property line YAY!

and well, a girl has to have her limits. mine has been reached. hubby's grandmother owns a house that is empty so we are moving in this weekend and putting a "For Sale" sign in the front yard. i'm done.

i don't know how long the move will take and when we'll be getting the internet connection going at the new place. everything is just happening... no plans, just 'winging it'.

so just how 'comical' do i mean?

the lining and handles hadn't been touched, so i decided to re-use them...gathered up some wool, dyed it with Wilton's food color, spun it to a bulky weight. then crocheted this:

another birthday

today is my baby's birthday. he's 3. my last one.. my itty bitty is a big, mean 3 year old stinky little boy.
yesterday was also an important day around our house. hubby and i had our 10 year anniversary.
TEN YEARS! doesn't feel like that long. guess time flies when you're having fun ;)

mmmmmmmm yarn in the mail! my order from knitpicks came in :)

my partner requested a little bit of 'stretch' to her sock... i thought this dancing with 7% elastic would be perfect! she did not have a color preference... so what i think i will do is make a pair from each color and give her the ones that turn out the best ;-P

i bought this for myself!
1 hank of shimmer in Grape Hyacinth this is a lace-weight 70% baby alpaca and 30% silk - yum! it is for my great friend sherry i plan to make her some sort of stole/shawl
and finally, 2 hanks of alpaca cloud in Midnight it is 100% baby alpaca also lace weight - softer than you can imagine - yum yum yum
i will by making my sister a TieOneOn stole for a cruise she will be taking in september. the pattern calls for a complimentary yarn - i'm spinning this. it is jet black 25% silk, 25% baby alpaca and 50% merino- simply divine. i am in the middle of a 'trial run' of this pattern now.... i'm having to do some size adjustments on the pattern so making a prototype of sorts.

i've also made a snowflake for snowflake mondays
i had a bit more to post about... but motherhood calls. gotta go for now :)

a good read

well, the good news is - hubby didn't kill me! the bad news is - my tub is still a giant cadet blue emery board.
today is my oldest's birthday! he is 8 years old. crazy! i can't believe he is 8 - he's going to be in the 3rd grade! third grade! that's big stuff! it's awfully early today, so i'm digging into my posting vault:

HOLY CRAP! i totally screwed up the bathtub!
the cleaner i used on the toilet yesterday made it so white and sparkly - i thought oooooo, i'll do the tub. bad. BAD. apparently you should READ the 'General Precautions and Restrictions' before the use of cleaning products.

all the parts that are white are nice and bright white - but ummmm.... it feels like sandpaper. the rest of it is this pale grey-blue color. what do i do!?!
this shit ate the enamel off my tub!!

here's the thing: this bathroom was remodeled about 2 months ago. completely gutted. down to the studs and subfloors... and now the bathtub will take the skin off the tender butts of my kidlets!

misc. blather

i have a tiny little project that i need to block. i'd like to stiffen it a wee bit as well. what is the best way to do this? any suggestions or on-line resources?

i worked on another knitted dishcloth for my mother last night.. although didn't get much at all done. we're on 4:00-5:00pm of the 2nd series of 24... OMG! i LOVE this show. we watched the first series in regular time during the actual season... somehow missed the first 3 episodes of the 2nd... we're just now catching up. if you haven't seen these yet...definitely a must!!

watched another movie the other day. i'll work up a critique on that later. it was The Forgotten. have you seen this? ick - it was bizarre, good, but weird.

woohoo - the man next door backed into his drive-way with a Uhaul today! my neighbors are moving! why am i happy? several reasons. they are LOUD - weird - LOUD at like 3 in the morning LOUD, they have a 7 year old son that would never come play...isn't that just bizarre? my neighbor on the other side has 4 kidlets,2 doors down 1 kidlet, my 4 kidlets.... that's a whole lotta kids out playing - we always invite him(through the fence), he'd accept and then never show. just weird. don't know if he was shy or if mom said no. and (i'm going to get grouchy mail over this) they have a pit bull that they allow to sit on their front porch. although i will never own this kind of dog, i had nothing against this one... until it attacked the postman. from then on... anytime it's out, i have to make my kids come in or go in the backyard. he went after the postman when he was in my yard, by the way, not his... so i worry about what he considers to be "his" property and i'm scared about him seeing my children as a threat or prey. just a scary breed.

so i'm cleaning the bathroom today and a thought occurs to me. everyday hubby comes home from work, i ask his day went and he asks about mine. "what'd you do?" course, i can't ask him (gov't security and all that).... anyhow... here i am, in my ratty headband 'comfy clothes' --
come on, you all know THOSE kind of clothes that i'm talking about, right? hole in the butt shorts with paint splatters, too stretched out elastic, a bra that has definitely seen better days, a t-shirt worn so thin (why-even-bother?), no make up and my favorite blue rubber gloves. so here i am, scrubbing the toilet (yes, literally) thinking to myself...."how am i going to answer this question today?"
there is nothing at all positive about the answer "scrubbed the pot" i know he knows it gets done... but this just isn't something i want him to picture me doing.
of course we did other things today, but this was my thought at the moment.

go help maureen out - she's made 2 sweaters and is on the fence as to which to gift... give her your opinion

so how will i answer?
"oh, i blogged and read blogs, jumped on the trampoline with the kids, we read some books... you know daily stuff"

just been busy. how do you everyday posters do it? i'm thinking you cheat. have a posting vault somewhere hidden in the corners of your computer... that's it, isn't it!?! hmmm.... sounds like something i should do :)

what have i been up to? well, LOTS of stitching for my kitchen and bathroom swap pal.


i went to the knitting group and got lots of one-on-one by the wonderful Melisa who taught me how to knit & purl continental. it's coming along. my purls are still very loose, but i'm figuring it out. i really enjoyed my time with her. we had great things in common and i'm very excited to meet up with her again :)

i've been working on fulling (felting) swatches and have become too ticked off to mess with it for a while. well, maybe more this afternoon. i wish i could get better wool yarn locally HUMPH!

i have dyed several more batches of wool. i'm very pleased with how it is all turning out. i will hopefully be borrowing a drum carder from a lady i know in a week or two to begin blending and carding all my fluff. the fair is coming up and i'm considering entering my spinning...... thinking about it.

too funny the things we fiber fanatics put our families through.
my microwave beeps - which brings 3 of my kidlets -a runnin 'round the corner. "whachya makin?" because my children consume more food than a pack of wild dogs... seriously - where does it go!?!

example of one day=
breakfast: 4-8 bowls of cereal
mid-morning snack: 2 bananas 4 spoons of peanutbutter 4 graham crackers 4 small milks
lunch: 6 sandwhiches 4 mounds of chips 2 apples
afternoon snack: 4 small fruit juices 8 baby carrots 4 piles of raisins 4 small bowls of yogurt
dinner: 4 servings lasagna, 8 slices garlic cheese bread

are you not amazed!?! that's a LOT of food... and they are still little... i'm terrified of what they are going to inhale as the teenage years approach

okay, back to the microwave: kidlet #1 "whachya makin?" kidlet #4, who has been in on the experiment with me, grinning answers "gwape wool" a collective groan from #1,2&3, drooping shoulders and they walk away. thoroughly disappointed. while i (and kidlet #4) are quite excited to check on our experiment and see what color our 'gwape wool' has become.
i have the fleece of a cotswold and a corriadale (i think?) that i decided to comb together to see how the different wools would play and dye. my thinking was that the longer 'hair' of the cotswold would take much less color than the 'wooly' corriadale.... i was sorta right. using grape koolaid as my color; the long hairy fibers sucked up the blue dyes where the wooly fluff soaked up the reds.... so once it dries, i will spin it up.... hmmmmm interesting little experiment. think i'm going to try it again with cherry koolaid and see what happens.

i went to a wonderfully fun spinning class on saturday! i loved it. had so much fun. reminded me why i love spinning so much and i've gotten all involved in it again. it's been a while since the last time i played with hilary, so i got her out again and discovered i am much better now than i was a few months ago : ) AND i learned how to ply!! woohoo

when i get the second bobbin full, i'll ply it and see how it looks. i'm calling it "society" it's a red with baby blue and a deep purple. i bought it from oregon trail yarns they no longer have this color so i made up a name - oh, and it is superwash, so no felting in the future.

well, i did complete the quota of 18 rows yesterday. i actually did 19 AND weaved in all the wicked ends.... however, i've decided to go to target for the mixer... well, i'm thinking a nice wall clock. i like the blanket, but after looking at it for a while last night and then again this morning, i've decided it's just not her style. very early 80's isn't it????


the color is fairly accurate.

she's much more of a countryish/ shabby chic kinda girl. so this will become a UFO while i complete a few other things. i do have every intention of finishing this. it's chenille, so very soft and hard to frog without messing up the yarn. so eventually one day, i'll get it done.



here is the back of Zeeby which is a beginner's pattern from the SnB book. why, Ms. Stoller, did you give it this title? i hate it! in fact, the only reason i even own this book is because my hubby picked it up in the 'used' section of our local bookstore for $5. i accidentally left it out on my dresser and my 7 y/o saw it. great! so now i had to give him yet another explanation that i wasn't ready for. back to the bag.... my knitting is still obviously from a beginner... occasionally i will purl when i should be knitting and vice versa, causing funky ripples and little holes in my project... but i plan on lining it and adding stitching on it with a bright turqoise, so i guess they all just add to the character (shhh, i'm trying to convince myself).



a purchase i made a few weeks back. what is wrong with me? haven't i enough yarn?!? truly, i believe it's a sickness. but how could i resist this color? soo yummy

but why the headbands and rubberbands? because Cheryl made this AWESOME bookmark using these headbands and i want to do one too!!! thought i'd give a rubberband a try and see if it worked..... we'll see.

do i torture myself with deadlines?
this coming saturday, the 25th, i have a wedding shower to go to. last night, i decided to make a throw for a gift. i'm using 2 strands held together and it's a ripple of sorts... i completed 4 rows last night... did the math, if i do 18 rows per day i should have it done friday night to weave ends and wash on saturday.... i know that doesn't sound like a lot, but you must remember that i am the world's slowest crocheter (self-proclaimed) not to mention kidlet and life interruption. YIKES!

i started a blog. do i feel that i've added anything significant to the blog-world? no, not really. i certainly wish i had the eloquence of margene, the humor of laurie, the wit of regina, and the talent of elizabeth. so i'll continue to post and read and read and read (damn blogines) and perhaps they will rub off on me.
i have made tons of 'blog buddies' and i LOVE that! i've had a wonderful time, sent and received fabulous gifts 'cross country and the world... and i LOVE that! get to watch projects grow and see all the talent in the cyber world of crochet and knitting... and i LOVE that!
without ya'll, i would never have strayed from a pattern and gotten to be a contributor at Crochet me... yeah, i LOVE that, too!
thank you donna and julie for helping me get this silly site looking great and running well. and thanks to my hubby for doing all things mundane and keeping the site fixed... because i am forever screwing it up.

my life-long friend, ramona, had a cat- jennifer.. for as long as i can remember, and i've known her for at least 26 years. jennifer went to cat heaven a few months ago. she was a black cat with white tuxedo markings. my friend misses her very much.
we just got a kitty. she is black and white and i shall call her jenny. so dang cute and she attacks everything that looks like it might move. totally cracks me up. my arms and legs are all scratched up from her endless clawing.



it's pretty safe to say, my big, fat and old cat, rooster, thinks she is here as punishment. little jenny is not at all afraid of the great dane, josh, or my aussie, sally. why? is the question. why - would any person in their right mind have 4 animals? because i was tired of the children whining... "why does so-and-so not have to feed one.... it's my turn to not have to feed a pet" problem solved. 4 kids, 4 pets. now they all have the responsibility of feeding one. except now the fight is for who gets to feed jenny. go figure

i was SO completely looking forward to this summer and hanging out with my kidlets, playing soccer and baseball and jumping on the trampoline --- OMG! they are seriously trying to kill each other. i literally had to pull one off another this morning. the amount of fighting that is going on amongst them is insane! truly nuts! i had to send them all to their rooms yesterday just to have a moment of peace for myself. they fight all day and then at night beg, plead, cry and yes, even shed tears to be able to sleep in each other's rooms. can someone please explain this to me?

when hubby got in from work he took them all to the park for an hour. i love my man! while they were away, i sat quitely and crocheted. i'm working on a design (hopefully) for the next Crochet me.

i have taken elizabeth's advice, and have cast on for a real project.. not just a dishcloth. i'll post pictures as it grows.

"I subscribe to Crochet World, and last month in the section where you can send request (forget what it's called). There was a letter from a 92 year old woman who said she had sent many people patterns in the past from the column, and never once received a thank you or postage costs. It made me sad to think our world was like this..that someone couldn't simply write a thank you note. So, I sat down and wrote her a letter. Today, to my surprise, I received a lovely note for her saying that she has received many letters from people and it has restored her faith. I am so glad that others, like me, have hearts..when so many don't. Anyway, she also sent me a few scrubbie patterns and I will cherish them. I plan to send her another note tomorrow, but her birthday is coming up on June 25th. So, I was hoping that you lovely women would have some ideas as to what I could make for her? She crochets and knits. And I crochet, knit, cross stitch, scrapbook, bake..whatever. I just want something creative and something she will use, you know? Any ideas??.........just to tell you alittle about her (from her letter). She will be 93 in June of this year. She still drives her car, knits and crochets. Her husband passed about 12 years ago, and she loves working in the yard. She has 4 grown children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren..all boys."

stupid cow

so far today has been a work day... working on the yard and house. got some dishes done. pruned the ginormous rose bush in the backyard. raked up the fallen pine cones and needles. trashed the broken, weather-worn, and dog-chewed toys. stripped paint from the remodeled bathroom door. then, made lunch for the crew - mmmm mexican. with home-made tortillas. yum yum




you need to run out to your local mercado and pick up a press if you don't have one :) makes for nicely rounded and flat tortillas.

completed only one row on the HUGE red blanket for my sister last night during a movie. i spent most of the time with it covering my face instead of stitching on it.

Movie Review
White Noise
Michael Keaton

my thoughts: the creepy factor of this movie really worked. because of the "possibility" of it all. the background noises the sudden silence and stillnesses... putting you on the edge of your seat ready for something to jump out and then it doesn't. but then does at unexpected moments, making you jerk and squeal like a little girl.
the things that really bugged me:
this movie could have been SO much better. they could have gone into more detail on many different scenes and ideas. with the medium and the meddling. i felt like she should have shown up at least once more in the movie. i think her character could have had a lot to add. also could have elaborated more with 'Raymond' - he should have known of 'John's' EVP involvement and been more a part of it. It also was never clear what the wife was actually trying to tell him, if it was to 'leave' or go and help these people, which each instance was obviously a set up by the three evil spirits.
another thing i would have added is a quick shot of the detective starting to research and get into EVP as one of the final scenes (if not the very last) of the movie. that would have been cool and added an extra shiver of creepiness and the feel of 'continuation'....
over-all, it was good. but could have been better.

who is it that decided movies need to be an hour and a half? if it were scenes/plots that added to a movie to make it more real, a better story, more elaborated, more thought out and "complete"... i would pay more. i would much rather sit through a really good 2 - 2 1/2 long movie than an okay 1 1/2.... that just makes me feel like i've wasted time and money.

would you rather movies be longer in order to be more "complete stories"?

movie night with my kiddos. we watched "National Treasure" pretty good little action flick for the kidlets. i heard a lot of people didn't like it. but my son sure did and that was good enough for me.

don't think i've posted this here yet. it was a gift for a recent high school graduate that watched my oldest for around 30 minutes after school everyday - because that's how long it takes to get from my daughter's school to him :)

back home!

after a VERY unexpected family emergency, i'm back home --- and glad to be :)
because of the circumstances, i didn't get any crocheting or knitting done. i did get the yellow knitted dishcloth complete before going :) that made me really happy. i've heard horror stories about binding off, so i was a little afraid, but it wasn't all that bad. i definately need some practice... but i'll be making another dishcloth soon. i gave it to my mom. she seemed to be pleased.

for those who are concerned: all is well, i just had to go give comforting and a listening ear.

on the drive down - you'll never guess. we had a wreck. completely totaled my sister's truck. i was driving - of course. i'll post some pictures of the "after" when she can email them to me. for the faint of heart or stomach skip the next paragraph.

we were driving right along, it was about 10 at night, just leaving the little town of santa anna so i was just beginning to pick up speed again.... pitch black highway....and a small herd of solid black cattle decide to cross the road. it was truly the most awful experience of my life. i hit a cow. going about 60-65. there were 5 of them crossing of the highway... there was NO where to go. dead center of the truck - thank God! if it would have been to the left or right, or i had swerved... i can't even imagine what might have happened to my sister and i. there are SOO many things to be grateful for... that we were in a truck, that i wasn't speeding, that i didn't swerve, that it wasn't a full grown bull, that the ranch owners have 'loose cattle' insurance, that the town folk of both santa anna and coleman all showed up to lend a hand and check in on the two city girls that hit a cow, that the chief of police was such a nice guy, the state trooper for driving us to the police station to wait for a ride, the dispatcher of the police station for letting us in the back to watch late night tv while waiting for our ride (coming from 2 hours away). and i'm SO grateful they waited until we were gone before shooting that poor steer. i just don't think i could have handled that.

my sister and i both walked away without a scratch - without a bruise... just a bad memory.
now, the laundry beckons me.....

fashion statement

aren't they pretty? i know you are going to rush right out and buy yourself a pair!(actually you should) yup, carpal tunnel - both hands. suck! my hands starting going numb occasionally as i was crocheting or on the computer a while back. now it's happening at night while i sleep - i'll wake up because they hurt- my hands and arms up to my elbows will be like ice - no blood circulation at all... it's actually quite scary. my hands go numb after just 10 minutes of crocheting/knitting now. so i have to wear these pretty gloves most of the day and night until i get my "custom" splints to wear at night.
so looks like i need some of those fingerless gloves i've never understood. i just have WAY too much going right now to try and make them.... wonder if i'll be able to find anything at any store with summer being here, pretty doubtful. i'm supposed to keep my wrists warm all the time. so regular gloves when i'm not doing stuff and these when i'm on the computer or creating. anyhow ---

my stitches are terribly uneven, but i figured out my purl addition problems and am cooking right along with this dishcloth! it's simple and pretty ugly, buy i'm proud :) my mom just redecorated her kitchen in yellows and reds, i plan on giving this to her and several more... i bought this book to help me learn more stitches, practice, and yet still accomplish something. after all, it doesn't really matter if a dishrag is a little unsightly, does it?!

buttons!

first off, thank you all so much for the wonderful well-wishes for my daughter and nannie. both are doing fine. my daughter chose a bright purple cast this time (yes, this time... she broke her other arm last spring).
also thank you for easing my mind about the moths!! i really was freaked out about it.
sorry i've been away for so long. with the end of the school year SO SO quickly approaching, i have not been home much. PTO meetings, teacher conferences, advisory board meetings, meet next year's teacher day, class parties, field trips, Karate demonstrations, my bi-monthly MOPS meeting has been switched to weekly for the summer, and of course now, weekly check ups with the pediatric orthopedic surgeon for X-rays to make certain the radial cup in her elbow stays aligned to heal properly...whew! i think that's it oh yeah, investor's meetings/dinners. i'm really anxious for summer to officially get here and for my babes to be home for a few days just to hang out with. you know, before swimming and tennis lessons start, soccer and T-ball games, track meets and cheer competitions. don't forget science camp, karate kamp, cheer camp and art classes. it's great fun for them... i know it sounds like SO much, but remember, there are 4 and they each do their own thing. it keeps us running. but it's fun.

i have had great fun at crochetville with the button swap. gotten great buttons!!

for those of you who do not know: i have been away for good reason. my nannie was in the hospital for about a week. i was spending all my extra time with her. then, the day before she was to be realeased, my daughter broke her arm. in a big way. she is now magnetic with plates and screws and rods - you name it. she was in surgery for 3 hours saturday night getting fixed up. she is home from the hospital now, still in pain, but doing well. she has a long recovery ahead of her.

i haven't made a thread snowflake yet today. i know i'm supposed to re-do the one from last week, but i don't know... think i'll look at the next pattern and see if i like it better.

the construction going on in the house is driving me mad! no matter how much i sweep and run the floormate, there is white powder all over the floor! UGH - curse the drywall dust!! i now understand why people go stay in a hotel during renovations. before i always thought it was kinda crazy and a waste of money... not anymore!

on the knitting front - i'm no good. i start out with 10 cast on and then after a few inches of work, i have around 20! i know i'm adding them somewhere in the purl, but i just can't figure it out! i'm going to sit down with it and my instruction dvd today and see what i come up with. hopefully i will be able to solve my problem.

well, that's it for now, ya'll. i have to scrub walls in the hall and then start taping the moulding off..... they are supposed to get re-textured today! WOOHOO!
